BERNHARD RIEDER GOES USA
Due to the fact that so many people asked about the story of Bernhard Rieder, it was time to write this little overview. The big change started 2006. He quit his job as sales manager in insurance industry and decided to make 3d computer graphic as profession. The journey started in summer 2006 on the vienna airport.

First station was Washington, then Nevada, Arizona, Utah, California, Michigan, Rhode Island, New York, and North Carolina.

"I had a very good feeling about my decision, and I thought 16 years successfull working experience in insurance business is enough. It was time to make my passion to my profession. And well, I did it.", so Bernhard Rieder.

And so he visited different companies, like Softmirage in Costa Mesa, or Swaystudio in L.A, RealityX in Hollywood, Displayboys in Irvine CA, Studio AMD in Providence, Little in Charlotte, and much more.

I've got so many inquiries, and questions about my way, that it wasn´t really possible to answer each email in full detail. So here are some answers to the most common questions.

What the heck is 3d computer graphic ?
You can see it everywhere in film, broadcast, tv, advertising, commercial & spots, print, architetcure visualization and more. It´s a computer technique in 3d environment, and yes, it´s an art too. You can create what ever you want in 3d environment -you have to make models, texture it, animate it. Of course the light is very important, the materials, the camera and much more. There are different parts, and each is very unique.

How long do you do 3d cg ?
I´ve started in 1999.

Why did you go to the USA ?
Because here is the 3d-industry very strong and you have much more opportunities- of course you need a passion for this job. To be a good 3d-artist you also need really good skills and understanding in different workflows. If you are really interested in 3d and always ready for new techniques there is the place where you can grow. I also wanted to increase my knowledge and gain more experiences in that field.

Isn´t Austria the right place for 3d copmuter graphic ?
In fact, to me Austria is a very beautiful country. But it´s really different to the USA, in many cases, you really can´t compare it. In Los Angeles you have a lot of jobs for film, broadcast, tv or commercials. You really can´t find these oppertunities in Austria, no wonder, we don´t really have a big film industry. So if you really want to make 3d, then you should go where you'll be needed.

I really appreciate the USA - the companies are more focused on that, what you really capable of. As instance, if you are a very good modeler, nobody will ask you what you did before as profession, or if you have studied cg, or if you have passed any high school degree. They ask you what you are able to do, they are looking for what they need, and if that fits together, that´s it. If you are good in what you do, you will find lot of projects and companies who want's to hire you.

What´s your education ?
In fact, all I know is what I need to know to be sucessfull in my business. I start working when I was 15, quit school and made an apprenticeship. After this I´ve made my military service which is an national obligation. And after that, I've started my career in insurance economy, studied insurance business at the J.K.University in Linz, and founded my first company in 2000.

Why did you leave school with 15 ?
In fact, there were different reasons. I did what I had to do. I quit school, because I couldn't see any reason to stay. Teachers only could teach me something I was not interested in. I knew, I will never need such stuff in my life. And when I was 15, I asked myself always the same question. Why the heck should I do something, I am not interested in ? Why should I waste my time ? That was the main reason.

You didn't study 3d on the college ?
When I was 15, I decided to learn as much as I could from a professional. I never had the chance to go to a 3d- college, so I learned everything by myself. Life is different, and everybody has to fell his own decision - you have to think about it and do the right thing.

Why did you visit so many states in 2006 ?
Well, when I left Austria I had a good reason. First I was hired from a company to make another 3d job in Los Angeles. The next purpose was to get more connections in 3d business - and well, I really love this town.

Yes, but why you flew from the Westcoast to the Eastcoast, and why did you travel over Nevada, Arizona, Utah to get to Washington, Rhode Island, North Carolina and New York ?
Indeed, it was all for my business and yes I was very exited about all the opportunities. It wasn't my first business trip to the United States - but a very important one.

What's about Rieder-Enterprises Utd. ?
I am very happy about this. I started this company 2000, and operated in different fields of interest. My service is mainly management consulting, and many companies appreciated my support during the last years in many ways. Today I have my focus on 3d cg companies.
